Five Spider-Man Films Coming to Disney+ in the UK This Week

Spider-Man No Way Home

The Disney+ library contains nearly every film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, save for a few notable exceptions. Along with The Incredible Hulk, the entirety of Jon Watts’ Spider-Man trilogy is absent from the streamer due to the films being distributed by Sony. However, Disney+ viewers across the pond will soon have the chance to watch nearly every live-action adventure of the web-slinger. Beginning June 17, Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2, both of the Amazing Spider-Man films, and Spider-Man: Homecoming will be added to Disney+ in the UK and Ireland. Disney has not given word about the status of Spider-Man 3, Spider-Man: Far From Home, or Spider-Man: No Way Home, but the fact that the other five films will be heading to Disney+ is a massive coup for the House of Mouse.

Disney has been working to get Sony films on its streamer for some time and inked a licensing deal with the studio last year. Beginning with Sony’s 2022 slate, features will head to Disney+ in the U.S. after they run first on Netflix, which was an additional deal Sony made around the same time as its Disney pact. Unlike Disney, Paramount, or Warner, Sony is a studio that doesn’t have a direct link to a streaming service, so outside deals need to be made in order for its films to be available to wider audiences. Given the collaboration between Disney and Sony on the MCU Spider-Man

films, it makes sense that the companies would come back together for the licensing agreement.

What’s interesting, though, is that the deal is for the U.S. only, and begins with Sony’s 2022 releases. Putting five Spider-Man films on the UK version of Disney+ seems to be a separate decision unless Disney and Sony have amended the initial terms of their contract. Nonetheless, it’s going to be an exciting time for European subscribers to be able to have multiple Spider-Man films available next to almost every other MCU release.

As far as what the future holds for the Disney and Sony partnership, things are at a bit of a standstill now that No Way Home has come and gone. The film marked the finale of Tom Holland’s first trilogy as the wall-crawler, and it’s unknown when the actor will next put on his spider suit. Sony head Tom Rothman wants to keep the franchise going, which is completely understandable after No Way Home made nearly $2 billion worldwide. Rothman recently said that Sony hopes to have Watts, Holland, and Zendaya all return for a fourth Spider-Man film, but neither Sony nor Disney have officially announced anything regarding the character’s MCU future.

On a smaller scale, Marvel Studios is working on Spider-Man: Freshman Year, an animated series that is being made for Disney+. The show will focus on Peter Parker’s early days as Spider-Man and will be taking place in the MCU, but it’s unclear if any of the live-action actors will return to voice their characters. Speaking of Disney+, there’s been no indication that any of the MCU Spider-Man films will be coming to the U.S. version of the streamer anytime soon. Given Sony’s deal with Disney, any upcoming entries in the Holland-lead franchise would eventually be added to Disney+, but the status of the other films is uncertain. Hopefully, additional agreements can be reached in the near future to make the MCU more complete on Disney+.
