Jared Leto is Keeping the Door Open for Morbius and Joker Returns

Suicide Squad Cut a Lot of Joker Scenes Says Jared Leto

Jared Leto has spent some time in the comic book movie world, both with Marvel and DC, but it’s currently unclear if we’ll ever see him back in either of those roles. He notably appeared as the Joker in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, which was originally intended to spawn a spinoff movie focusing on Leto’s Joker and Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. Seemingly, those plans were scrapped when Suicide Squad was met with negative reviews and failed to meet box office expectations.

Of course, Leto was given the opportunity to reprise that role, thanks to Zack Snyder. He made an unexpected appearance in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, a four-hour cut of Justice League which featured new, alternate, and extended scenes. Warner Bros. execs have since stated that Zack Snyder’s Justice League

was a one-off and there are no plans to develop any further movies with Snyder, leaving the future of Leto’s Joker uncertain.

More recently, Leto starred in Morbius, a movie that’s a part of Sony’s Marvel Universe alongside the Venom films and the upcoming Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web. Unfortunately, the film was not met with the same levels of financial success achieved by Venom and its sequel. Its reception with critics was even worse, garnering some very bad reviews for the Marvel-based feature. That would seem to put the kibosh on the potentiality of Morbius 2 happening anytime soon.

As it stands, the odds don’t seem very high that Jared Leto will soon be back on the big screen as the Joker or as Morbius. But Leto has not written off the idea of reprising either of those roles, even if no plans are in place for that to happen. In a recent interview with The Playlist, Leto was first asked about the planned Joker and Harley Quinn movie that was supposed to happen, only to fall apart. Leto notes that he didn’t know much of anything about the spinoff, suggesting those plans didn’t get very far. All he knew is that it would be written by John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, whom he has since collaborated with on WeCrashed.

Perhaps Leto may have a better idea than anyone as to whether his return to Joker or Morbius will ever happen. When asked specifically if he would ever return to either role, Leto added:

You can catch Leto in the new series WeCrashed on Apple TV+. Following the rise and fall of the startup company WeWork, the series also stars Anne Hathaway, Kyle Marvin, Kelly AuCoin, and Steven Boyer. It premiered on Apple TV+ in March following a world premiere at South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival in Austin, Texas, earlier that month.
