Loki Episode 3 Theories Explained: “Love Is A Dagger”, Bisexual Twist, Is Sylvie The Sorceress We’ve Been Waiting For? (Image credit: Marvel/ A still from Loki)

Loki Episode 3 is here and while it may not have answered all the questions fans were hoping for, it reveals a crucial detail that could be a game-changer for ‘God Of Mischief’ fans. Lady Loki (played by Sophia Di Martino) doesn’t like to be addressed as a ‘Loki’, and there isn’t much explanation in this one.

Tom Hiddleston as Loki has never crossed paths with love, and this episode seems to have thrown him right into the pit. In episode 2, he left Mobius (Owen Wilson) after what we all then referred to as Lady Loki. But, as in our Loki Episode 2 discussion article, we had mentioned that Marvel isn’t lazy to call her that. We hate to say this, but we told you and she’s not Lady Loki!

1. Sylvie Laufeydottir or Lushton?

A document leaked from last week’s episode that lists Lady Loki’s name as Sylvie Laufeydottir. For anyone not keeping up, Loki’s real full name is Loki Laufeyson and this just confused things. With all the hints that the mysterious lady is Lady Loki, where did Sylvie come from? Well, maybe we have some theories.

Sylvie possesses the power of enchantment and her first name is the same as Marvel’s Sylvie Lushton, who creates Loki. But if she’s Lushton, why was Laufeydottir in the document? Lushton, in the comic strip, is on his way to being Amora The Enchantress. Lushton also has the superpower of enchantment and the shade of green she radiates reminds us a lot of Amora too. Is Sylvie the sorceress we’ve all been waiting for? Fun fact: Way back in 2013, Tom Hiddleston apparently pitched Marvel to make a duo movie pairing Loki with the Enchantress. Is that eight years later in the form of a web show?

2. Loki & Sylvie are canonically bisexuals!

This would undoubtedly be the main reveal that will drive fans crazy on social media. Loki is genderfluid and has been a topic of discussion for the first few episodes among fans, not knowing that Marvel will be making a full stop in the immediate next episode. As they get to know each other, Loki asks Sylvie if anyone is waiting for her on the other part of this crusade. After her answer, Sylvie shoots a question that every fan wanted to know the answer to.

The conversation reveals that both Loki and Sylvie are canonically bisexual. This ends the debate about whether Loki is gay or whether he is straight. He is a BI and this is a celebration for the fans. For a short moment Loki, Sylvie also talks about ‘love’ and finally the first answers it with a ‘dagger’.

3. “Love is a dagger…”

If there’s one conversation that would be ignored by many, it’s when Tom Hiddleston’s Loki sets the example that love is a dagger. When Sylvie asks her what love is, Loki pauses for a moment, but after getting drunk and singing Asgardian songs, he comes up with a metaphor of ‘love is a dagger’. “It is a weapon to use far away or close by. You can see yourself in it. It’s beautiful until it makes you bleed. But eventually, when you reach for it….”

“It’s not real,” Sylvie ends. His nature of a trickster and a god of mischief has put him in many tricky situations. His teaching that he is an adopted child, not the favored child, he seeks confirmation from Odin and blames himself for his mother’s death – Loki has experienced too many tragedies for a character who has his solo project as a web show ten years later got his first gig. Why did he choose everything in the world to compare love to a dagger? This could either be one of those impromptu Loki references, or there’s a whole lot of depth to it that we could get after the show is over.

4. TVA is the real villain?

Loki Episode 3:

Loki understands that not all variants in TVA were created by the timekeepers, but about the same is being lied to. There is a good chance that the real evil actually lives in TVA and Sylvie is here to accomplish that task. For a short run in the episode, we see Ravonna Renslayer (played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw) facing Loki & Sylvie with her army.

If TVA is actually being falsely manipulated by timekeepers, what about Mobius? Is he part of all this, or is he on the list of many victims TVA is lying to? Loki Episode 2 wasn’t all about flawless tricolor (pink, purple, and dark blue) picturesque cinematography, but was mostly about developing the chemistry between the two protagonists. All this came at the cost of trading Loki’s bromance with Mobius. Did we miss Mobius? Hell yes!

5. Loki to help TVA’s Mobius?

Loki Episode 3:

Another theory that pops up from Loki Episode 3 is how Mobius could also be manipulated like other variants and he must have actually ridden a jet ski in his pre-TVA life. That could be why he loves jet skis so much, because he is emotionally connected to them from his life for TVA. Could all this be Renslayer’s vicious plan to overthrow timekeepers? Are timekeepers anything at all? Remember how Renslayer’s question about them in Episode 2 didn’t answer clearly?

Mobius was finally able to reunite with Loki in Episode 4 and we could already imagine the scene where they would discuss TVA being a sham. Renslayer’s warning to Mobius that this could be his last mission if things go wrong says how he might get into trouble. Who would he seek help for? Of course, Loki and Sylvie.

6. An episode of just over 30 minutes, why?

Loki Episode 3:

Yes, Loki Episode 3 doesn’t have as much to offer as the first two episodes, but I’m pretty sure this lays the groundwork for a lot of chaos to come. Clocking in at around 35-36 minutes (minus the credit streak), there should be a good reason Marvel kept this short. They could have easily stayed 10 minutes longer, either adding clutter to whatever was there, or extending the timing, which could have seen Lamentis (the planet Loki, Sylvie are on) deserted and crashed into the TVA.
