Delhi Capitals’ (DC) head coach Ricky Ponting backed captain Rishabh Pant after the defeat in their final league stage game against Mumbai Indians (MI) and said that the young wicketkeeper-batsman is still learning captaincy.

Pant made some tactical blunders in the match against MI that cost Delhi Capitals a spot in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 playoffs. Notably, Delhi Capitals were battling Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium for a playoff spot and the win would have guaranteed them a top-4 finish.

However, after some poor decisions and fielding efforts, Delhi Capitals faced a defeat to get knocked out of the IPL 2022 and the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) became the 4th and last team to qualify for the playoffs.

“Absolutely, no doubt in my mind that Rishabh even in the last season he was the right choice for captain. Rishabh did a terrific job with the team after he took over from Shreyas (Iyer) after he injured his shoulders,” Ponting said during the press conference after DC lost by five wickets against MI.

“…he is just a young man and still learning captaincy. Being captain of a T20 team, especially in IPL, which is a high pressure tournament, is not easy thing to do and unfortunately, every single thing you do will be scrutinised. He certainly got my full backing.”

It is always hard to put a finger on one single aspect of the game – Ricky Ponting

Delhi Capitals’ head coach mentioned that the top-order of the team failed miserably against Mumbai Indians, which is not ideal in a high-profile game.

“It is always hard to put a finger on one single aspect of the game. Top of the order our batting was poor, we were four down for 40, which is not the ideal way to start a T20 game, especially big games which you have to win,” he said.

Pant’s biggest blunder in the match against MI came when he didn’t use DRS when explosive batter Tim David had edged the ball and the on-field umpire didn’t raise his finger. David did major damage after surviving as he smashed 34 runs off 11 balls.

Meanwhile, Ponting further lauded Tim David for his batting performance. He added that he is gutted that they were unable to win the match against MI.

“Obviously, Tim David played well. He was probably out first ball but there are so many aspects of the game we will be disappointed with. The players need to learn from games like that. I feel pretty gutted that the game slipped through out of our hands, we didn’t close out the match in the last few overs,” he said.

Also, the Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit Sharma backed “quality captain” Pant to learn from his mistakes and come back strong.

“He is a quality captain, we have seen it in the past season how he leads his team. Sometimes things don’t go your way, I have gone through such situations, such things happen on the ground, sometimes things don’t pan out your way,” he said.

“He can take a lot of learning and try and keep things simple, he has a great mind, he reads the game well from behind, and such fumbles can happen and it is important to not doubt yourself. He will come back strong.”
