Former Indian player Virender Sehwag said Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings look good at the bottom of the points table in IPL 2022. Punjab Kings drubbed Mumbai Indians by 12 runs on Wednesday at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.

Punjab Kings openers Mayank (52) and Shikhar Dhawan (70) scored vigorous half-centuries to propel their team to a huge score of 198/5 in the first innings. At one stage, Mumbai Indians seemed to accomplish the chase with utmost ease as young guns Dewald Brevis (49) and Tilak Varma (36) almost set the tone with an 84-run stand for the third wicket.

MI vs PBKS: Dewald Brevis’ dismissal led to MI’s batting collapse

Brevis was the aggressor as he slammed four boundaries and five sixes in his 25-ball 49, he pummelled 28 runs against Punjab Kings spinner Rahul Chahar in the ninth over. The South African youngster missed his maiden IPL fifty by a whisker as he couldn’t pick the short ball off Odean Smith.

In the 13th over, Tilak Varma was run out by Mayank Agarwal and Arshdeep Singh at the non-striker’s end after a miscommunication with Suryakumar Yadav. Three overs later Kieron Pollard got run out despite being reluctant for the second run insisted by Suryakumar.

MI vs PBKS: Suryakumar Yadav could have calculated better: Virender Sehwag

Suryakumar clobbered a couple of sixes to Vaibhav Arora but couldn’t finish the job for Mumbai Indians as he fell to Kagiso Rabada in the penultimate over. MI needed 22 runs in the final over. Jaydev Unadkat smashed Smith for a six on the first ball but the latter picked three wickets to defend the score.

Mumbai Indians suffered their fifth loss in the tournament and their nemesis Chennai Super Kings registered their first win against RCB on Tuesday. Both Mumbai and Chennai, who share nine IPL titles between them, are at the bottom of the points table.

Sehwag opined that Suryakumar Yadav miscalculated during the slog overs and should have stayed at the crease till the last ball.

I said it before itself, let the rich teams stay at the bottom, Chennai and Mumbai, they look good at the bottom of the table. It is difficult to win after two such runouts. I don’t think that Suryakumar Yadav knew that the final over will be bowled by either Odean Smith or Liam Livingstone. Had he known that, as much as 25 runs could have been kept in the bank for the final over,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.

“Suryakumar Yadav could have calculated better. He is playing all the shots, looks in control, and gives that versatility to the team by batting at any position. The execution is really good, he would hope that he gets more balls to face ahead,” he added.

Mumbai Indians will play Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on April 16 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
