Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Artwork Offers Another Look at Oscar Isaac’s Spider-Man 2099

Footage from Sony Pictures’ upcoming Spider-Man sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, was recently shown to a lucky few at The Annecy International Animation Film Festival, and while that footage has not yet made its way online, a piece of exclusive artwork shown at the event thankfully has. Depicting the Miles Morales versus Spider-Man 2099 battle that was teased in prior trailers, the artwork is just a taste of what’s to come from this hugely ambitious animated outing.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will once again be led by Shameik Moore as Miles Morales AKA Spider-Man. A teenager who takes over as Spider-Man in an alternate universe where Peter Parker is killed, Miles was introduced to audiences in the 2018 Academy Award winner, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

The final moments of Into the Spider-Verse also brought fellow variant Spider-Man 2099 into the fray. Voiced by Moon Knight star Oscar Isaac, Spider-Man 2099 will enter the multiversal madness rather quickly in a classic hero-versus-hero battle caused by a simple misunderstanding, and which concludes with the pair getting along and fighting the good fight together. Spider-Man 2099’s real identity is Miguel O’Hara, a brilliant geneticist living in an alternate New York City in the year 2099. Gaining his powers after attempting to recreate the abilities of the original Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2099 will assist Miles Morales throughout his journey across the Spider-Verse.

Along with artwork, which demonstrates just a taste of the stunning animation that will be on display in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, several details have also now emerged. We have all waited patiently to find out who will terrorize Miles and his Spider-Pals across the Spider-Verse, and it turns out that it will be lesser-known villain The Spot. Voiced by Scott Pilgrim vs. The World star Jason Schwartzman, The Spot has the ability to open inter-dimensional portals. Something which should come in handy in this mad world of multiverses.

As well as introducing The Spot, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will add various other Spider-People to proceedings. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse sees Miles Morales return for the next chapter of the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse saga, in an epic adventure that will transport Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man across the Multiverse to join forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People to face off with a villain more powerful than anything they have ever encountered.

These Spider-People include Oscar Isaac as Spider-Man 2099, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy AKA Spider-Gwen, a super-heroine from another dimension; Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker AKA Spider-Man, an older, disheveled version of Spider-Man; Issa Rae as Jessica Drew AKA Spider-Woman, a pregnant woman with spider-like abilities; and Takuya Yamashiro as the “Japanese Spider-Man” from the 1978 Spider-Man series.

Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson from a screenplay by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is scheduled to be released in the United States on June 2, 2023, with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse set to be released in March 2024.
