The Star Wars saga, is a four-decade multimedia franchise that, over the years, has gone from a rather niche market to being a part of the mainstream, even having its own section in DisneyWorld Florida known as Galaxy’s Edge. This new surge in popularity is thanks to Disney purchasing Lucasfilm and releasing its sequel trilogy. While the sequels saw a number of favorite characters return, including Han Solo and Leia Organa, the films also introduced a number of new characters including scavenger Rey, former Stormtrooper Finn and the notorious Kylo Ren.

Adam Driver made a name for himself playing the morally confused son of Han and Leia, Kylo Ren AKA Ben Solo. While Driver has starred in a number of films prior to the Star Wars sequel trilogy, like Frances Ha, his role as Kylo Ren has become one of his most globally recognizable. Driver’s performance was so strong that even those critical of the sequel have stated that he was one of the few reasons to continue watching the films as his character development is what kept the viewers interested. While it’s difficult to imagine, there were other actors lined up to play the role of Kylo Ren. Here are four who were almost cast as in the Star Wars

role.

Most known for his role as a young Magneto in the X-Men prequel series, Michael Fassbender is a phenomenal actor whose talents have earned him a great deal of respect in the industry. From his performance in Jane Eyre to the beloved representation of the anti-hero/villain Magneto, Fassbender has no shortage of range. Per EW, the actor was considered by J.J. Abrams to play the role of Kylo Ren when the villain was referred to as “Jedi Killer,” before the storyline for The Force Awakens had even been established. Though Fassbender would have given us a killer Kylo Ren, his age and appearance would have been out of place for the character, making him a not-so-great fit in the end.

This choice may come as a shock to some, but Hugo Weaving‘s remarkable skills as an actor — which he’s proven in multiple franchises, like The Matrix and Lord of the Rings — make him worthy of taking on almost any role. Between his eloquent lectures in V for Vendetta and his strong presence as a villain throughout The Matrix, Weaving would have made a very compelling Kylo Ren, bringing a new level of class and style to the Star Wars sequel trilogy. That being said, Weaving was most likely taken off the roster once the decision was made to make the main antagonist of the film Han and Leia’s son, essentially eliminating Weaving from the running entirely.

Recently showing off his skills in the Harry Potter spin-off franchise Fantastic Beasts, Eddie Redmayne has proven himself worthy of all his accolades. Unlike Weaving and Waltz, Redmayne was not only considered for the role, but actually made it to the audition. According to Redmayne’s interview with Uproxx, he blew the audition when he found out the role was for a villain and wound up missing out entirely. While Redmayne was disappointed to lose out on this opportunity, the loss came with a win. Because he didn’t get the part for Kylo Ren, Redmayne landed the role as Newt Scamander in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, a role that suits him far more than the brooding Star Wars villain.
