Be warned: Major SPOILERS for Stranger Things Season 4 to follow…

The epic, feature-length finale of Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2 was packed with dramatic, exciting, heart-breaking moments, perhaps none more so than the fate of beloved character Max Mayfield. After avoiding the grasp of Vecna throughout the fourth season (thanks to the wonderful work of Kate Bush), the final moments of Chapter Nine: The Piggyback saw Max ensnared by the villain. Audiences last see Max lying in a hospital bed, her fate largely unknown. Thankfully, The Duffer Brothers have now offered some insight into Max’s wellbeing. We say “thankfully” but honestly, it all sounds pretty bad.

Despite the Hawkins gang’s best-laid plans, Vecna does get his hands on Max. Ominously levitating, Max’s limbs are broken, and while her eyes are not snatched away thanks to the efforts of her friends, she does tell Lucas that she cannot see before falling into a coma. , The Duffer Brothers have now stated that Max is indeed brain dead and blind – though they do confirm that she is still alive.

But what will this mean for Max going into Stranger Things Season 5? The last we see of Max, Eleven enters her mind to find nothing but a black, empty space. How will Max get her mind back? Is she now partly residing within Vecna, who we have been told absorbs everything from his victims, including their memories and abilities? Sorry to say, we will just have to wait and see.

While details of Stranger Things Season 5 largely remain a mystery at present, The Duffer Brothers have recently revealed a few insights into the direction of the final series. Matt Duffer has revealed that Will Byers will step into a more central role in season 5 saying, “Will’s going to be a big part and focus, is really all I can say of Season 5, in his journey. We’re starting to see his coming of age, really. Which has been challenging for a number of reasons, some of which are supernatural. But you’re starting to see him come into his own.”

The siblings behind Stranger Things have also divulged details of the setting for the fifth season, saying that the entirety of it will be set in Hawkins. As opposed to the dalliances to Russia and California that we saw in season 4. “We wanna go back to a lot of the things we did in Season 1,” Matt Duffer added. “A lot of the original groupings and pairings that we had in Season 1 – there’s something nice about coming full circle.”

Starring a large ensemble cast that includes Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Maya Hawke, Priah Ferguson, Brett Gelman, Matthew Modine and Paul Reiser, Stranger Things Season 4 is now available on Netflix in its entirety.
