The Boys Showrunner Explains What Makes Jensen Ackles the Perfect Soldier Boy

The new season of The Boys has just arrived on Prime Video, and many fans are talking about Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy. Previously, The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke had worked with Ackles as Kripke created the popular series Supernatural which starred Ackles alongside Jared Padalecki. This connection opened the door for Ackles’ casting in The Boys, but his casting still came down to the right timing along with the actor fighting hard to get the part.

In a new interview with Collider, Kripke spoke out more about Ackles’ casting in the series. When the Soldier Boy character was written into season 3, Ackles was not originally in mind for that character. As it turns out, a chance phone call from Ackles to speak on unrelated matters led to the realization that he would make a fantastic Soldier Boy. Kripke quickly floated the idea to Ackles, and as it turned out, Ackles was just as stoked to be given the offer as Kripke was to bring him into the series.

But casting Ackles was not as simple as Kripke offering him the part. Kripke also had to get the studio heads on board, and not all of them were familiar with Supernatural and Ackles’ other work. Fortunately, Ackles was up for the challenge and put in his dues to get the job.

The casting needed to be just right for Soldier Boy for this character to make an impact coming into season 3. For Kripke, he knew that he had the perfect actor for the part based on Ackles’ versatility. He had personally witnessed what Ackles was able to bring to the table and was confident the actor could embody Soldier Boy, which is a character that is needed to be both charming and terrifying, depending upon the situation.

The Boys season 3 is now streaming on Prime Video.
