Islam Makhachev has had a hard time finding willing opponents, as he is widely seen as a high-risk, low-reward opponent. So the rising lightweight was thankful to get a contract signed against fellow ranked prospect Thiago Moises in the main event of the UFC Fight Night: Makhachev vs. Moses fight card on Saturday. Their showdown tops the main map of the Apex facility in Las Vegas, with a scheduled start time of 10 p.m. ET. Makhachev is in ninth place and is struggling to get a fight against anyone in front of him, but he says he will show in due course that he is the best lightweight in the world. Moises, ranked number 14, hopes to make a claim in the top 10 by easing the turmoil.

Makhachev is a -650 favorite (risk $650 to win $100), while Moises comes back at +475 in the final UFC Fight Night: Makhachev vs. Moises odds from William Hill Sportsbook. In the co-main event, former champion Meisha Tate (-135) returns to the cage to face Marion Reneau (+115) in a battle between veteran bantamweight contenders. Now UFC Fight Night: Makhachev vs. Moises is in sight, Parker has carefully studied MMA odds and matchups from every angle and released his top picks. A successful parlay of these picks would result in a payout of approximately 6-1. You can only see these choices at SportsLine.

UFC Fight Night: Makhachev vs. Moses preview

Parker knows Saturday’s main event will play an important role in what is arguably the promotion’s most talented division. There has been a lot of movement in lightweight since the retirement of Nurmagomedov, who left the sport 29-0 after his win over Justin Gaethje in October.

Charles Oliveira defeated Michael Chandler for the vacant title at UFC 262 in May, and Poirier confirmed his status as the top-ranked contender and next title challenger with his second lopsided beating of McGregor in 2021 at UFC 264.

Still, most MMA observers expect Makhachev (19-1) to appear in the title picture sooner or later. The native of Dagestan has long trained with and is compared to his compatriot Nurmagomedov, who is quickly building a reputation as one of the sport’s brightest coaches.

His child prodigy, Makhachev, has a remarkably similar style, which includes wrestling fast with the intent of a ground-and-pound attack once he gets his opponent to the mat. Coming off a third-round entry from veteran contender Drew Dober in March, he faces an equally ambitious prospect in Moises.

Moises (15-4) is a well-rounded Brazilian who has already shared the Octagon with third-seeded Beneil Dariush, whom he met during his UFC debut in November 2018. Moises lost a decision but has since won four out of five and wants to build on a win against resilient prospect Alexander Hernandez in February. You can only see who to support here.

UFC Fight Night: Makhachev vs. Moise’s predictions

We’ll be sharing one of Parker’s UFC Fight Night picks here: He backs up-and-coming prospect Daniel Rodriguez (-255) to defeat Preston Parsons (+215) in a welterweight bout that will be the fight on the preliminary map.

Rodriguez (14-2), 34, has attracted attention for his powerful punches, fearlessness and uncomplicated style. All of these traits were on display in his final outing, a win over rock solid veteran Mike Perry in April. Eleven of his 14 professional MMA wins have come close, but he could face a stylistic challenge against UFC rookie Parsons (9-2).

Parsons, 25, is a ground game savant who made his name by stopping four consecutive opponents in the Combat Night promotion. UFC Brass already had their eye on him as a prospect and offered him a short-term debut when another bout for Rodriguez fell through.

“See if Rodriguez uses his shot to keep Parsons at bay and not go to the ground,” Parker told SportsLine.
