New research released today by MoneySupermarket reveals footballers retain the trophy for the second year in a row for paying the most for their car insurance of £1,942 a year – more than four times the average car insurance premium of £473.

The price comparison website looked at more than five million auto insurance questions to determine how your job title might affect your auto insurance premium.

The survey finds that a wide range of occupations pay the highest premiums, with footballers at the top (£1,942) followed by car wash workers (£1,616) and sportspeople (£1,559). Fast food deliverers (£1,537) and slaughterhouse workers (£1,487) make up the remaining top five.

Dave Merrick, spokesperson for auto insurance at MoneySuperMarket, said: “Our research shows that football players have the highest auto insurance premiums for the second year in a row. This is probably due to the cars they drive, which can often be very high-end.

“As with last year’s results, a number of ‘everyday’ professions – such as delivery drivers – fall into the most expensive category. Insurance companies keep huge repositories of past claims information, which provide information about how they calculate a premium. As a result, some professions are seen as more risky and are charged more. But it’s also important to note that insurers also take other considerations into account, such as a driver’s age, their location, and their previous claims history.

“If you’re in one of these jobs and feel like you’re paying too much, you can often save significantly on your auto insurance by shopping around at the time of renewal. If you do that, you can save up to €280.”
